Thanks to everyone who organized, helped out and attend the Wildfire Community Preparedness Day BBQ on Saturday, May 10, from 12noon to 3pm, at the Ferry Island playground.
Approximately 100 residents, including many littles, joined in on the fun to learn more about the City's FireSmart program and emergency preparedness.
Activities included:
- Lunch
Off-duty firefighters from the local union branch of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF 2685 ) volunteered to cook and serve burgers and other food. - FireSmart Education
A FireSmart info tent with the City's FireSmart Coordinator Kim Service. According to Kim, people seemed most interested in emergency preparedness and evacuation planning, and that many community members went home with evacuation planning info booklets and grab-and-go kits. She also talked to residents about simple things that can be done around your household to help make it more FireSmart, such as mowing the lawn, cleaning the gutters, and trimming coniferous trees. - Walking Book Tours
Walking book tour of children's book about wildfires were set up in the field near the playground. Many kids also received FireSmart colouring books and 'Ember' tattoos.
