Open Burning Ban Lifted for Terrace

Ban is lifted as of noon on April 28, 2022
Fire Department
April 27, 2022

Effective at noon on Thursday, April 28, 2022, the City of Terrace will be rescinding the Category 2 and Category 3 open fire prohibition that took effect on April 14. All open fires are now permitted within the City of Terrace boundaries.

Recent precipitation and higher relative humidity allow for open fires to resume once a permit is obtained to do so from the Terrace Fire Department. Conditions will continue to be closely monitored and if a spike in human-caused wildfires takes place, prohibitions will be implemented on short notice.

The public is strongly encouraged to exercise caution with any outdoor burning and campfire use. It is the responsibility of the individual to ensure that burning is done in a safe and responsible manner in accordance with regulations. Before lighting any fire, check with your local Terrace Fire Department to see if any local burning restrictions are in place.

Within Terrace city limits, fire pits in the backyard are permitted for the purpose of cooking food only and must be contained within a non-combustible receptacle made of cement, brick, or metal, and no more than 3 feet in diameter. Only cut, seasoned wood or charcoal is to be burned; yard waste burning is not permitted at any time. Small propane fire pits are also permitted. Campfires are permitted at Ferry Island campsites.

Safety tips:

  • Please be considerate of neighbours and do not light fire pits if weather conditions could cause smoke to be a nuisance to others.
  • Anyone lighting a fire should be sure to remove flammable debris from around the area.
  • Fires should never be left unattended.
  • A hand tool or at least 8 L of water should be available nearby to property extinguish the fire.
  • Never burn in strong wind conditions.
  • A fire must be completely extinguished before leaving it.

Please direct burning complaints to the City of Terrace Fire Department at 250-638-4734 or the Bylaw Officer at 250-615-4037. For more information, visit
