It’s National Forest Week, which recognizes Canada’s forest heritage and the value of this renewable resource. Forests are vital to our economy, culture, traditions, and history. Everyone depends on forests in some way—whether for their livelihood, culture, recreation, or way of life.
Our local forests give so much to us. Check out the latest updates on the Howe Creek trail system to see how Terrace Community Forest helps give back by ensuring our forests are renewed and remain resilient for the future. This year, numerous sections have been repaired to improve drainage, reduce erosion, and improve safety for users. In addition to their amazing work on local trails, Terrace Community Forest also manages a forest license on our behalf. By thinning out trees in these second-growth forests, biodiversity improves, and the revenue from this lumber helps support organizations in our community.
Ways to celebrate forests
- Take a walk in the woods nearby and get to know your forest
- Arrange a tree planting
- Care for a newly planted or neglected tree, and study its species
- Identify all the things at home or school that are made of wood
- Learn about organizations that demonstrate sustainable forest management
- Tour a forest sector industry or processing site
- Learn about the prevention of forest fires
- Contact a provincial forestry association for teaching materials
- Visit the NFW-BC Coalition website for information about NFW in BC

Submit a photo of forests and trees in Canada to the Canadian Institute of Forestry and you could win a prize! There’s also a youth drawing contest—entries must be received by October 15.
