Terrace Little Theatre

Terrace Little Theatre has been active in the community since 1953.

Terrace Little Theatre Society is a non-profit charity made up of a diverse group of volunteers with a long history of providing quality theatre to the community. They are the longest continuous running theatre company in British Columbia.

Terrace Public Library

The first library was established in Terrace in 1929. It was located in several locations over the years until it found its permanent home in 1967 at its present location in George Little Memorial Park.

The library is operated by the Board of Trustees of the Terrace Public Library Association and funded through grants from the City of Terrace, the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine and the Government of British Columbia.

Membership is free to residents of Terrace, Thornhill, Rosswood, New Remo, Old Remo, Jackpine Flats, Copperside, Usk, and all communities east to Chimdemash.

Terrace Art Gallery

The Terrace Art Gallery is operated by the Terrace Art Association as a public, non-profit facility dedicated to the promotion and advancement of the visual arts in the community for the past 25 years.

REM Lee Theatre

Opened in 1975, the REM Lee Theatre is an ideal stage for professional and amateur theatre, recitals, business events, etc.

The R.E.M. Lee Theatre hosts a wide variety of performances throughout the year, from professional productions of dance, theatre and music, to local school and community performances.

The Theatre has a 702-seat auditorium, in-house lighting and sound equipment, dressing rooms, pianos and a host of other amenities.

Heritage Park Museum

Heritage Park Museum is a Municipal Heritage Site and Museum operated by the Terrace and District Museum Society. The Museum sits on 1.73 acres of scenic park land that was originally the first dairy farm in Terrace and later the site of a large WWII army hospital. Ten different buildings sit on the site, 8 of these are original log structures relocated to the Museum grounds from various locations in the Terrace area. Within each of the buildings there are artefact displays exhibiting the local settlement history of Terrace and the surrounding area. Displays highlight industries such as logging, mining, trapping, farming and tourism, as well as the general ways of life of newcomers to this area.

Heritage Park Museum offers tours of the Museum, children’s programming and walking tours of the local area. The site can be booked for private tours, weddings, corporate picnics, etc. Please call the Museum to find out about booking details and rates.

George Little House

George Little is the man that most people refer to as “The Founder of Terrace”. He gave the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway 9 acres of his land so that a new railway station would be placed upon it; thus started the beginnings of another northern town. With the coming of the railway, Terrace soon became a busy commercial hub and George Little saw the opportunities this would bring and built a permanent home for his family in 1914. He decided the best place for this home would be in the heart of the new and burgeoning town that he loved. Generations of the Littles have fond memories of their time spent in this family home and many community members retell stories of visiting and celebration. As Terrace grew, and time marched on, the house was eventually sold and moved as the downtown core expanded.

A few years ago the Director of the Terrace Tourism Society and the Director of the Terrace Economic Development Authority discussed having a downtown “hook”; something to draw people into the downtown core to fully appreciate all that Terrace has to offer. It was decided that the historic George Little House would be the very thing to accomplish this goal. The two-story building had been moved a number of times and had been used for a number of purposes, but was sitting empty and needed to be refurbished. The current owners at the time, the Ksan House Society, donated it to the City for use as a historic building. Being rich in history and old-world charm, what better way to pay homage to the founder of Terrace than to move his home back to the centre of town and use it as a focal point and gathering place? In the winter of 2003, in a momentous move, the house was brought back to the heart of Terrace and was refurbished to its original state.

As well, the main reception floor is used as retail space to sell local artists' wares and Terrace souvenirs. Local groups use the main floor for special events and gatherings and an old-fashioned monthly tea is served, harkening back to a more formal time.

This stunning, two-story heritage home is hard to miss at the end of Kalum Street in downtown Terrace and is a must see for anyone visiting our town.

Fishing

Welcome to one of the most pristine natural paradises in the world! A diversity of climatic zones supports an intricate eco-system of mammal and marine life.

With vast expanses of natural habitat, this area is home to some of the best Steelhead, Chinook, Coho, Sockeye, Chum and Pink Salmon fishing in the world. Freshwater angling adventures are only minutes away from Terrace.

Although some lakes are home to only one species of fish, others may contain upwards of a dozen such as Rainbow Trout, Kokanee, Lake Trout, Dolly Varden, Mountain Whitefish, Lake Whitefish and Burbot. The summer and fall months herald the arrival of Steelhead, Sockeye, Chinook and Coho Salmon on their spawning runs.

If the weather is cold enough to freeze the lakes, you can fish all year long. Lakelse Lake is a year-round recreational lake that hosts an array of winter sports. Smaller lakes are also good for ice fishing however the rivers are not recommended as they are too swift.

Saltwater fishing for Halibut, Ocean Salmon, Crabs, etc., is only a short drive away to either the Douglas Channel in Kitimat or the Pacific Ocean in Prince Rupert.

Did you know? The world record for catching (and releasing) a 99-pound Chinook Salmon is held by a visiting German tourist who had her first fishing experience in the Skeena River in 2001. Previously, the world-record was a 92 pound Chinook Salmon.

Farmers’ Market

The Skeena Valley Farmers' Market has been in operation for over 19 years, and has really grown in the last ten years. Terrace is the furthest point north in BC where fruit trees can be grown, and the wares of the 70+ vendors aptly reflect the products of the fertile Skeena Valley. Everything at this Market is home-grown, -made and -baked, and coming here on a Saturday morning is the social thing to do - think of it as a community living room!

Products run the gamut: fresh veggies; breads; lots of ethnic foods from local multicultural residents; fresh fish; canned foods; artworks; crafts and much more. One regular vendor is an organic farmer, another has a greenhouse and in the fall there's lots of garden produce. Unique heritage-type bedding plants are available in spring. The artisans make very distinctive products and the Market promotes local musicians—buskers often entertain—and there are community tables for fundraising and/or community information, and kids' activities are sometimes offered as well.

The Market is comfortable and welcoming to seniors, and a few of the vendors are seniors. Interestingly, many market vendors have moved on from here to start their own successful businesses.

The "Christmas Craft Sale" in November is always a big draw, featuring many regular market wares along with lots of Christmassy selections (baking, crafts, etc.) This sale takes place indoors at the Terrace Sportsplex.

The Farmers' Market is always busy, as both locals and tourists come to buy and socialize.
